My 1st ever kayaking expedition was organised by Water Venture Pasir Ris on 19th April 2008. It was a full day event and the expedition group size was relatively small. There were only 9 of us including 2 qualified instructors. I joined the expedition with my good kayaking friend der koon. It was really fun!!!
The day started with a bright sunny morning at Pasir Ris Park. After getting changed and waterproofing all our food and equipment, we gathered for an pre-expedition brief by our expedition and old time kayaker Louis.(Louis is also a Kayaking Instructor at Water Venture Pasir Ris). The route we took was we set off from Pasir Ris Park Beach> cross the shipping channel>head towards east in the direction of Pulau Ketam>went pass ketam>travel along the coastline of Pulau Ubin>stop at OBS camp 2 area for lunch>continue pass Menam Beach>Pass Chek Jawa>cross the shipping channel>and back to WVPR.
Below are some very nice photos taken by our expedition leader and those who went on expedition.
The above photo is taken off the beach of Pasir Ris Park. That's our expedition members and we're in the waters in between the Kelongs and the Beach. Good weather huh!
That's Pulau Ketam. A mangrove island that is made up of many mangrove trees which is home to lots of mudskippers, fishes and birds. A good place to seek shelter from the scorching sun! provided u use a dancer or any slim boats. definitely no Salom!!! u will get stuck! see below! we tried to bash through!
Above: Group photo between the waters of Pulau Ketam and Pulau Ubin
Above and below: Outward Bound School (OBS) School 2 on Pulau Ubin. The huge Ship below is a training facility for Heights and Ropes Confidence courses organised by OBS.
The name of Pulau Ubin orginates from the fact that there are plentiful of minerals, mostly granite rocks found on the island. That explains why the island has so many Quarries. There a lots of rock outcrops along the coast of Pulau Ubin. They are nice to watch but definitely not nice to crash into them! especially if your kayak is made of fibre glass!!! Look at the Kayaking photos below:
CHECK THIS OUT!!! When we were kayaking, we discovered this very mysterious looking temple among the rocks. It's pretty amazing. From the photos below, u can see that the furnace for burning incense paper is out in the water. The entrance to the temple is also flooded. I believe during low tide one can walk to the furnance and enter the temple as u can see steps actually leading to the furnace from the temple. the photo above with the light green beacon also shows the incense paper burning furnace See below:
At OBS School 1 jetty, u can spot a wooden plank that extends out of the jetty. It's not for fishing, but for jumping! It's called the confidence jump. When it's low tide, the height can be quite high. Kinda scary jumping into the green water from the plank if your scared of water and heights. Look at our expedition mate below!
When kayaking near the Eastern coast of Pulau Ubin. You will notice several protruding rock outcrops and a small beach. It's a small Island called Pulau Seduku or Frog Island. Want to know why it's called frog island? look below:
Below is a petrol boat. It's like a floating petrol station for the bum boats!
Below are the wonders of nature! Breath-taking sceneries!!!
Mussels harvesting below!
Look at the northern borders of Ubin! I guess they are to prevent illegal immigrants from entering Pulau Ubin.
And we found Jelly fishes along the beach of Pasir Ris Park when we returned:
It was a hell of a trip!! It was tiring but super fun! For those of you out there who are adventurous, want to indulge yourself in nature, exercise, get a good tan and de-stress from your stressful work environment. trust me. this is really good stuff! I will share on other expeditions the next time! Feel free to comment and if you would like more photos just tell me!
